Colleagues:
I have come across the term "enterogastric recirculation" twice in
the last week. The first was in an article discussing carbamazepine
absorption, the second was in relation to phencyclidine absorption. A
medline search yielded 3 hits, 2 in Japanese and 1 from the 70's
without an abstract. Not very enlightening. Is anyone aware of this
phenomena, and if so please point me towards a reference.

Hi Dr Wolowich,
Is the term enterogastric recirculation same as enteroenteric recirculation?
I had come across the term while working on an anthelmintic compound. Some
anthelmintics have this property of reentering the stomach from the systemic
circulation. Please check some references on some of these anthelmintics in
ruminant animals.

You may have better luck broadening your search to include 'enterohepatic'
which seems to be more commonly used in PK drug metabolism literature than
'enterogastric'. The phenomena is most frequently associated with
xenobiotics and/or their conjugated metabolites that are secreted into bile.
Bile makes it way to intestines where unchanged drug can be reabsorbed and
conjugates might be cleaved by a whole variety of different pathways. In
general it increases drug exposure and its variability.
The first example that pops into my mind is the oral contraceptives. Women
taking antibiotics may experience diminished effectiveness as the intestinal
flora is disrupted, cleavage of conjugated steroids by bacteria is
decreased, and there is a lower overall exposure to active drug.

An example for a pronounced enterogastric recirculation (ascorbic
acid sulphate) can be found in:
