Dear All,
Is there any good reference that provides the Pig organ (heart, kidney,
liver) weights, organ blood flow values, organ volume values?
Thanks
Ramesh

Dear Ramesh,
Lately I have searched for a reference on pig flows but I could not
turn up
any. Measurements have been done in the hear physiology/aneasthesiology
field, but those references express flow per gram organ, see e.g.
Duncker et
al., Eur Heart Journal 1987;12:1332-1339. One could take as a typical
value
for liver 600g for a 30kg pig and calculate a flow of 3 l/h (2.88 l/h
with
25% CV). On further communication with prof Duncker it appeared that in
more
recent papers such numbers are no longer reported because of the
presence of
arteriovenous shunts in the intestine. Furthermore in these type of
experiments the vena porta is probably not taken into account and also
there
is a strong effect of aneasthesia on the liver blood flow. Therefore the
blood flow of 3 l/h should be treated as a minimum; higher clearances
can
not be taken as an indication for extrahepatic clearance.
Please take into account that my literature search was not exhaustive so
perhaps more relevant references are available. I would welcome any
further
discussion on this topic.
Best regards,

Dear Ramesh,
You can find the liver weight , hepatic blood flow and heart weight of
pig
in this paper:
Mordenti J . Man versus beast: Pharmacokinetic scaling in mammals. J.
Pharm.Sci. 1986 , 75(11) 1028:1040
You can find more physiological parameters of mouse, hamster, rat,
rabbit,
monkey and dog and also human in above article. Other good papers that
are
mentioned the physiological parameters of various mammals (except pig
!!)
are:

human pharmacokinetics. Biopharm Drug Dispos. 1998 May;19(4):231-5.

I hope this help.
