Hello,
Is it OK to use water as a solvent for iv bolus injection, since we
found incompatibilty with saline or dextrose solution? Has any body
faced this cituation?
Thanks,

We had some problem with using water in sheep a while ago. Hypotonic
solutions caused lysis of red cells in the blood near the injection
site. The products of the lysis caused quite profound haemodynamic
effects.
Huang YF, Upton RN and Rutten AJ. Adverse hemodynamic effects caused by
the rapid intravenous administration of hypotonic solutions in sheep.
Res Vet Sci 60: 209-212 (1996).
From what I have seen in vitro, sheep may be more susceptible to this
than man.

You must maintain osmolarity that matches blood if iv push or infusion
or
you will destroy blood cells. Steve Mitchell, RPh
