My colleague and I are interested in learning about non-linear
models. In particular we are interested in the one compartment and two
compartment models (bi-exponential). We have found it difficult to
locate suitable references. We have reviewed the material at
http://www.boomer.org/c/p1/,
http://www.boomer.org/c/p2/ , http://www.boomer.org/c/p3/
, http://www.boomer.org/pkin/book.html. We also have reviewed
Seber and Wild (1989), Gallant (1987), and Bates and Watts (1988).
Do you have suggestions for us?
Respectfully,
Frank R. Lawrence

For a book, I would recommend John Jacquez's book "Compartmental Analysis in
Biology and Medicine". It is published by BioMedware
(http://www.biomedware.com/pages/resrchpub.html)
This book is a classic on compartmental analysis but a little heavy on the
theory. Jacquez's book "Modeling with Compartments" may have information on
nonlinear models, but I cannot remember for sure.
In terms of software, I suggest looking at SAAM II (www.saam.com). It is
very easy to construct nonlinear compartmental models, and they can help you
do it.

One of the best references I know (probably the best) is "Compartmental
Analysis in Biology and Medicine" by John Jacquez, 2nd Edition 1985
(Michigan Univ. Press???). Another classical reference is "Drug and Tracer
Kinetics" by Aldo Rescigno and Giorgio Segre, 1966.

An excellent text on this topic is "Gabrielsson and Weiner's Pharmacokinetic
and Pharmacodynamic Data Analysis: Concepts and Applications". The text begins
with a general discussion of pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, and modelling
principles. The application of these principles is then illustrated by over 70
modeling case studies. A diskette containing the WinNonlin model code and
associated data sets for all of these examples is included with the book.
If you are interested in obtaining a copy of Gabrielsson and Weiner, please
contact the Pharsight inside sales team (sales.at.pharsight.com) for pricing and
purchase information. Please let me know if there is any way that I may be of
further assistance.
With Best Regards,
