Hi,
I am working for a project for which I need to compare the clinical
outcomes of different clinical trials of different agents used for a
disease. Can anyone suggest me a good reference/method to compare
different clinical trials to get a meaningful inference?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Kumaran

Dear Kumaran,
I think this depends upon the nature of the outcome measure which you
are looking at. If continuous variable then no reason why you cannot
compare direct, eg BP or cholesterol, but you need to look at
variability around the mean changes between the studies. If
appropriate then you can look at odds ratios (eg dead/alive) giving
weight to the larger studies following the meta-analysis approach of
the Oxford Clinical Trials Group (search under R Collins or P
Sandercock).
I hope this is of use,

Dear Kumaran,
an excellent resource is the handbook of the Cochrane Collaboration:
http://www.cochrane.org/resources/handbook/
If you google keywords like "fixed effects meta-analysis",
"random effects meta-analysis", "heterogeneity", and
"publication bias", you will find excellent material in the web.
Hope it helps.
Best regards
