Dear All
Can someone explain the significance of ICP-MS (inductively coupled
plasma mass spectrometry). Is it an advance version of LC-MS/MS? How
is it on-par with LC-MS/MS. I am very much curious to know about this
technique.
Can anyone help me.
Chris

Dear Chris,
The technique is useful for PK purposes where you have a compound with
rather unusual atoms present, however my understanding is that in
general terms it is not as sensitive for drug-like-compounds as
conventional LC-MS.
Best regards
Michael

Primarily for elemental ions and differentiation of ionic state. Has
been
used in biotech by tagging targets (proteins) with metals or rare
earths.
Parallel with LC-MS/MS and sometimes a chromatograph can be hung on the
front end.
Go to the Perkin Elmer site for more info or just type in ICP-MS for the
wide world of info out their

ICP-MS is not LC-MS/MS.
It is MS with the ICP as ionizationsource source. ICP is in fact the
atomic spectrometer wherein a high energetic plasma (materials with
the mixed cloud of ionic, radiacal ionic and non-ionic species). It is
coupled with the MS analyzer, normally time based analyzer like TOF,
or much of time the Single Quadrupole or sector analyzer.
It is very useful for the microspeciation of the metallic analytes,
identification of extractable leachables in pharmacutical
formulations, heavy metal impurities in herbal and drug substances and
so on. Microspeciation means you can find the metallic elemental
composition with the exact valance state such as Fe+2/Fe+3 and so on.
Recently, these instruments have gained grace in the bioanalytics also
to find out the redox state of the enzymes (indeed your CYP is also
the metallocomplex), mineral and inorganic content profiling of the
plasma and a lot of forensic application where ICP with laser ablation
is used to burn the tissue of biopsy/autopsy (LA-ICP-MS).
More you get to learn from the MS manufracturer sites/handouts/and a
lot of lit on it.

Very useful for quantitating heavy metal ions.

Dear
It is not the advance version of LCMSMS. It is commonly used for the
analysis of metal ions particularly when isotopic studies are required.
