Dear Colleagues,
I would like to exclude an outlier from an Bioavailability study
statistics analysis. This outlier has a previous medical history of
hiatus hernia.
Although this medical condition is easily related to gastric and
enteric dismotility, I have not found a article that clearly address
the hiatus hernia and absorption discrepancies.
I would be very glad if someone have references or previous experience
in hiatus hernia and abnormal absorption.
thanks in advance,
Daher

Hiatal hernia should increase GIT retention modestly. More specifics be helpful. Am not aware of a reference. Did you do a lit search yet?
Good luck.

Dear Sir,
Kindly find the article below, which describes the influence of oesophageal hiatus hernia affecting the absorption of levodopa.
Chihara N, Yamamoto T, Lin Y, Tsukamoto T, Ogawa M, Murata M. Severe kyphosis and esophagus hiatal hernia affected in the levodopa absorption of a patient with Parkinson's disease, Rinsho Shinkeigaku. 2009 Aug;49(8):493-6.
Thanks & Regards,
Dr.S.Gunasakaran, MBBS,MD,

There are several different types of hiatal hernia depending on their size and whether they have herniated into the chest. Gastric emptying will depend on the type and size of the hernia. Fed versus fasting status may also play a role.

Most hiatus hernias are small and unlikely to affect gastric emptying significantly, so I would say that it is unlikely to be the cause of the subject's outlier status. On Dr Gunasarkaran's reference be aware that levodopa itself delays gastric emptying (See Robertson DRC et al, 1990, Br J Clin Pharmacol 29, 47-53.)
