Dear PK scientists,
Is their any introductory books on population PK and NONMEM where one can learn by themselves rather than attending the expensive workshops?
Thanks,
Thomas Apy

Thomas, I think you'll find that as a command line driven program it's a tricky tool to get started with.
I would propose you take a look at the NLME module in Pharsight's Phoenix platform; as a new user I think you will find the graphical interface much more intuitive to learn. As you develop you can easily switch to writing your own models either graphically or in the intelligent text editor.
There is a recorded webinar that will give you some introduction to how the software looks;

The software itself is available as teaching, academic and commercial licenses. Further to some other conversations it is very easy to run NONMEM from this tool and automatically get common diagnostic plots, tables, compare runs etc. as well as send the output to other tools such as R.

Best regards,
