Does anyone know the name of a software package that allows for scans
X-Y scatter plots and results in the generation of the (X,Y) coordinates
that comprise the plot?
Thanks.

(and its free) - I seem to remember the ACS had some Windows programs that
did this - anyone else with ideas]

I know of three programs for "un-plotting" graphs. "UN-SCAN-IT"
(available from Scitech), "UnGraph" (available from Biosoft), and
SigmaScan (from the makers of SigmaPlot). I am about to try
"UN-SCAN-IT" (as soon as I get a new scanner). I've used "UnGraph" in
the past, but it's rather crude in my opinion and needs a lot more
refining. SigmaScan is rather expensive and is probably overkill for
your needs.

The catalog of Jandel Scientific (the company has been purchased by SPSS
Inc. meanwhile) mentions SigmaScan and SigmaScan Pro.
An extract from the text:"... Select from 44 different measurements -
areas, perimeters, angles, major and minor axes, XY digitizing and much
more..."
It's a 32-bit Windows 95 and NT program.
Find out for yourself on WWW.SPSS.COM. Click on "software" and "science".
We use their product Sigmaplot for scientific graphing and are very
satisfied.
Hope this helps.
Regards.

I think that UnGraph for Windows fromBiosoft,
(http://www.biosoft.com/) with allow xy data to be generated from a
scanned image.

Dr. Bonate-
There are two programs which I have used to generate the data from scanned
plots: Sigma Scan/Image and UNSCAN-IT (this is a new program which has a
demo at www.silkscientific.com- I'm still "test-driving" it right now.)

A colleague of mine uses Ungraph for windows by Biosoft.

There are several programs that will do this for you, (SigmaScan etc). but
you have to pay money for these. I have used a program called NIH Image to
digitize and extract data from published graphs before. It is pretty
straight forward and there is a nice description of the procedure that you
can download at the NIH Image ftp site. The big plus for NIH Image is that
it is a free download.
I hope this was of some help,
