We are trying to extract tertiary butyl alcohol from water as a prelude to
extracting it from blood and urine in humans. It is a metabolic byproduct of
methyl tertiary butyl ether. We are using purge (30ml He at 40C for 15 min)
and trap (Tenax) and cryofocused at -160C. Then injected into GC/MS. We
are having little trouble with MTBE but TBA due to its polarity is difficult to
extract from H2O. Has anyone had experience with extracting highly polar
compounds from H2O that could be applicable? We are getting about 2%
recovery. The octanol/water partition coefficient is about 600 vs 15 for
MTBE.
